Awards

The first three finishers in each age group in each event will receive gold, silver, and bronze 2024 USATF Masters Indoor Championships medals respectively. 
 
USATF individual event champions will also receive a championship patch; Only one patch will be awarded to an individual athlete no matter how many events they win. Members of championship relay teams do not receive patches.
 
The fourth through eighth place finishers in each event will each receive a USATF Masters Championship ribbon. 
 
Non-US Citizens are not eligible to displace US Citizens or USA affiliated athletes for awards or to score points in the club competition.
 
Awards may be picked up at the Awards table on the second floor. Awards may be picked up no earlier than one hour after the completion of the event.

Team Championship

Team trophies will be presented to the first place, second place, and third place men’s, women’s, and combined teams. Points are awarded as follows:

  • 1st place – 8 points
  • 2nd place – 6 points
  • 3rd place – 4 points
  • 4th place – 3 points
  • 5th place – 2 points
  • 6th place – 1 point

Team trophy presentations will take place in the infield at the conclusion of the meet.

Bib Numbers

Your competitor (bib) number must be worn on the front during all competitions (exceptions for field event athletes, who have the choice of front or back). In addition, all track athletes will be required to wear a bib number on their back indicating their age division. You may pick up your bib numbers during the designated packet pickup times.

Declarations/Final Event Check-In

TRACK EVENTS

Athletes in track events and the Pentathlon must declare either online by 5:00 pm the day before their event or in person at least 60 minutes before the start of their event at the declaration desk. After declaring (either in person or online), athletes must also check-in with the clerk 15 minutes before the start of the event.

To declare online for track events and the Pentathlon you will need the email and registration password that you received in your confirmation email (the password is at the bottom of the email, under the heading "Managing Your Registration").

STEPS TO DECLARE ONLINE (ONLY for track events and pentathlon)

Click "Manage My Registration", log in, click on Declare for your events. On the next screen select "declare" or "scratch" for each of your track and pentathlon events. After you have made all of your changes, click the "Save" button on the bottom of the form.

FIELD EVENTS

Athletes must declare at the field event venue 20 minutes before the start of all field events, except the high jump and pole vault. High Jumpers must declare 30 minutes before the start of the event and Pole vaulters must declare 45 minutes before the start of the event (schedule).

NOTES

  • If you do not declare, you will not compete! NO EXCEPTIONS.
  • Packet/number pick-up is NOT declaring.
  • For early morning track events, declaration sheets will be available the afternoon before in the declaration area in the clerking area. Failure to declare means you will be scratched from the event and WILL NOT compete.

In addition to its renowned 200-meter Mondo banked track, Dr. Conrad Worrill Track & Field Center at Gately Park offers all field stations (a throwing cage and areas for shot put, two high jumps, pole vault and two long/triple jumps), one large scoreboard and seating for 3,500 athletes and spectators.

Implements & Spikes

Field Event Implements and Implementation Inspection

Two (2) competition-approved implements of every size and weight will be provided.  However, it is recommended that athletes bring their own implements and have them certified at the Implement Inspection area. The Implement Inspection area will be next to the entrance to the indoor track, on the left.

Athletes wishing to use their own implements must submit those implements for inspection at least two hours before the scheduled start of their throwing event. Approved implements will be impounded until the start of the competition.
 
Implement Inspection will be open as follows (subject to change based on final schedule):

Wednesday, March 20 3:00 pm - 5:30 pm
Thursday-Sunday, March 21-24 7:00 am – until completion of the last throwing event

All implements should be checked in at least two hours prior to the start of your event.
 
Implements for all early morning throws (before 10 am) should be checked in the evening before the event.
 
Shots must have a plastic outer shell; metal shots are not permitted. All weights and superweights must have a plastic shell inside a bag or straps that comply with the 2023 USATF Competition Rules. Metal weights and superweights that are designed for use outdoors are not permitted.

Vaulting Poles

Pole Vault Poles for Rent

Masters T&F Support Depot will have 30 vaulting poles available for rent during the Championships. The cost of rental is $50 per athlete if rented online, and $75 after the online rental deadline.  Those paying the rental fee have access to all 30 poles, though they may have to share a particular pole with other athletes.  If a pole breaks or is seriously damaged, the renter is responsible for replacing the pole. Spike Type and Lengths

Only ¼ inch “Pyramid Spikes” will be allowed on the competition surface at the Dr. Conrad Worrill Track & Field Center.  Prohibited spikes include “Needle Spike Pins” and “Christmas Tree Spikes”, and any length longer than ¼ inch. All shoes will be checked.

Starting Blocks

Starting blocks are permitted (they are optional) for events up to 400 meters and the 4x400 relay. Only supplied starting blocks will be allowed; no personal starting blocks will be permitted.

Protest and Appeals

Any protest must be made to the event head official or to the referee, not later than 30 minutes after the results of the event are communicated, announced, or posted. Protests not filed within that time frame will be denied.   live.finishtiming.com/results will be used as the official clock for each event. Once the event is marked “official,” the protest period is up for that event. Once a protest has been decided and the result of the protest communicated, announced, or posted, you have 30 minutes to file an appeal. The fee to file an appeal is $100. To file an appeal, you must submit the written appeal to the Games Subcommittee. The appeal fee is nonrefundable unless your appeal is upheld. Forms for both will be available at the Declarations and Clerking tables located on the back stretch of the track.

Records

For appropriate and timely processing of record applications, athletes achieving a new age division record in an event should be prepared to submit a copy of their birth certificate or passport (driver’s license or similar is not acceptable), if not already submitted to USATF with your entry.

Starting Heights

High Jump and Pole Vault

Starting heights for the high jump and pole vault competition will be determined by facility equipment limitations and the Masters Track & Field Championships Games Subcommittee. Minimum High Jump height is 0.85m (2 feet, 9 inches); minimum Pole Vault height is approximately 0.85m (2 feet, 9 inches).

Eligibility Requirements

General

All eligible members of USATF and eligible members of other World Masters Athletics (WMA) Masters Affiliates may compete in these Championships. However, only U.S. citizens and athletes eligible to compete for the USA in international competitions may score or win Championship medals; all athletes not eligible to compete for the USA will receive equivalent awards.

Qualifying Standards

There are no qualifying standards for this competition.

Age Divisions

Athletes must be 25 years or older on March 21, 2024. Individual and relay competitions will be conducted in five-year age divisions. Please note that this is a masters meet following masters, not open, rules. i.e.  the hurdles for men 25-49 will be 39 inches (Open Men use 42 inches).

USATF Membership

All athletes must be 2024 members of USATF (or other WMA Masters Affiliate) in good standing.  USATF memberships may be purchased online. Non-U.S. citizens must be eligible members of their nation’s World Masters Athletics Masters Member.
 
The 2024 USATF Membership year begins on November 1, 2023. If you have selected “auto renew”, your membership will automatically renew on January 1, 2024 and you will be eligible to register at that time.

Club Scoring & Athlete Representation

All clubs must be 2024 USATF member organizations to score team points and athletes must have that club listed in their USATF profile when entering these Championships. Find your local association here.

Relays

Club and non-club relay teams shall be separate divisions. USATF Competition Rule 332.2(g) details the definitions for both club and non-club relay teams. Non-U.S. citizens and non-USA affiliated athletes may not be members of club relay teams.

Proof of date of birth will be required from all competitors in advance. See the Verification of Age section on the entry information page for more details.

Entry Information

You must be a 2024 USATF member to enter the Championships. If you do not have a 2024 membership, please complete a membership application first. You must also meet the eligibility requirements. NOTE: If you are a multi-year member through at least 2024 you may enter using your 2024 USATF membership number.

Entry Process

  • Member athletes in good standing of USATF or of other WMA recognized Masters affiliates are eligible to compete. Non-USA affiliated athletes cannot displace USA affiliated athletes for places, and cannot score team points. At least 2/3 of the athletes advanced to finals must be athletes who are USA affiliated as determined by WMA..
  • A 2024 USATF membership is required for USA affiliated athletes to enter online (please join online if you are not a member). Non-USA affiliated athletes must present evidence that they are members in good standing of their appropriate WMA Masters Member. Letters attesting to their status should be addressed to Jerry Bookin-Weiner, Chair, USATF Masters Track & Field Committee at mtfchair@usatf.org.
  • To enter online without an entry mark, put NT or NM in the Mark box during the entry process.
  • A Help Line is available for those athletes who need assistance with the entry process. For assistance, call the USATF National Office at 317-261-0500 during normal business hours, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm ET Monday – Friday.

Combined events count as the first event.

Friends of the National Masters Championships Contribution

Help ensure the high quality of the Championships and future meets with a “Friends of the National Masters Championships” donation. All contributions will be listed in the official meet program, unless a supporter requests to remain anonymous. Please consider one of the following:

Relay Entries

Relay team entries will open on Wednesday, March 20, 3:00 pm at Packet Pickup.  Relay entry forms will be available there. Relay teams may only enter on-site, however, each member of a relay team must also be entered in the meet as an individual. The normal entry process applies to each team member, including the deadlines.

  • 4x200m Relay Form

All relay teams must return their relay forms to the Relay desk in the Packet Pickup area by:

  • 10:00 am Friday, March 22 for the 4x800m Relay
  • 4:00 pm Friday, March 22 for the 4x200m Relay
  • 4:00 pm Saturday, March 23 for the 4x400m Relay

Additional specific entry procedures and location will be communicated prior to the meet and on-site in the meet program. The fee for relay team entries is $60 per team, payable in cash, check made payable to Chicago Park District,  or credit card.  Relay entries will close as indicated above.
 
Athletes must be entered in the meet to compete on a relay team.  Athletes who will only be entered in a relay must register online and select the “Relay Only” event. 

  1. Each member of the team must be registered for the Championship in either an individual event OR a Relay Only event.  Note: the “Relay Only” event should NOT be selected if you are competing in an individual event.  You should select this if you are only competing in a relay.
  2. If proof of age (copy of birth certificate or passport) is not on file with USATF; please follow the necessary steps to have this verified.
  3. All entries must be received by the deadline (on-time deadline is February 21, 2024, late entry deadline is February 28, 2024 and requires an additional payment of $60 per individual).

If an individual will be joining others to form a team and is not competing in any other events, the process described above still applies.
 
All members of club relay teams must be U.S. citizens for the club relay team to score points in the team competition.

Athlete Shuttles to the Venue

Regular shuttle service from each of the host hotels (Hyatt Regency McCormick Place, Hilton Oak Lawn, and Baymont) to and from the Dr. Conrad Worrill Track & Field Center will run Thursday (March 21) through Sunday.  Shuttles will be available beginning at 6:30 am each day with the last shuttle running 30 minutes after the last event concludes.  The hotels are not responsible for the shuttles and cannot answer questions about them.

Vertical Jump Rule Modification

 
In a mixed age or mixed gender vertical jump competition, an athlete who has won his or her age group may not go out of progression unless attempting a USATF or WMA age group record.
