Personal

Abdihakim ‘Abdi’ Abdirahman, son of Mahamed Abdirahman and Halima Ahmed Handule is nicknamed the Black Cactus. He is a native of Somalia and became a U.S. citizen on Jan. 28, 2000 after his family moved to the United States in 1990. His father, Mahamed, worked as a production head for Conoco, an American Oil company. The family moved to the U.S. and settled in Tucson, Arizona where Abdi still resides. Finishing third in his 17th career marathon at the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Marathon, Abdirahman qualified for his fifth Olympic team at the age of 43, 20 years after making his first team. He is also a four-time USATF Champion at 10,000-meters, a distance that he competed in three times at the Olympics (2000, ‘04, ‘08). Abdirahman’s fourth Olympic Games in 2012 was  first in the marathon. He first broke the USATF Masters marathon record in the 40-44 age group by finishing ninth at the 2019 TCS New York Marathon in 2:11:34, he then bettered that record at the 2020 Olympic Trials (2:10:03). In 2016, Abdirahman finished third at the TCS New York City Marathon making him the oldest male runner to make the podium at NYC.
