Volunteers' Safe Sport Resources

Volunteers play an important role in making thousands of events run smoothly. From working national championships to RunJumpThrow events, volunteers are essential for smooth and easy operation at all levels of competition. This page offers resources for current and returning volunteers, as well as those seeking to become a USATF volunteer.

Volunteer Benefits

Volunteering at a USATF event provides fulfillment and a deeper connection to the sport and your community. Depending on which association you are volunteering with, you may receive the following benefits, in addition to a sense of fulfillment and a chance to make a difference in an athlete’s life:

  • Stipends (for select positions only).
  • Transportation and meals, if applicable and consistent with established USATF rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Nominating individuals for election to various positions at the local and national levels, if applicable.
  • Educational opportunities.
  • Experience in sports event management.

New Volunteers

In order to be a volunteer at a USATF meet or event, you must:

  • Obtain a USATF membership.
  • Take the three SafeSport modules (Mandatory Reporting, Emotional and Physical Misconduct, and Sexual Misconduct Awareness Education). Click here to learn more about Safe Sport and how to get started on the course.
  • Pass the USATF Background Check. To start your Background Check, please click here. (Please allow a minimum of two weeks for Background Checks to be completed).
  • Abide by the Volunteer Code of Conduct.

Please reach out to your local association to volunteer with USATF events.  We urge you to work well in advance of any meet registration deadlines.

Returning Volunteers

Check here to see if your USATF Safe Sport compliance is current. If you think your compliance is current and can’t find your name, please reach out to usatfsafesport@usatf.org.

Restricted Volunteer Waiver Program

In certain limited circumstances, USATF will allow the use of a restricted volunteer waiver. To learn more about what this means and for access to our event volunteer policies and volunteer waiver, click here.
