USATF Marathon Specialist Course

Overview
Learn about the history, training science, critical workouts and strength programming, nutrition, environmental factors, race day and mental preparation strategies of marathon racing. Use these tools to help evaluate athletes and their unique abilities to formulate individualized training plans for runners at any level, from first-time marathoners to elite marathon running.
 
Course Format
This blended learning experience combines the flexibility of self-paced digital modules with the high-impact engagement of a live, interactive workshop.

  • Self-Paced Learning: Access comprehensive course materials and digital units immediately upon enrollment via My Trainings. (8-10 Hours Total)
  • Live Workshop (Zoom): Consolidate your knowledge through a group project, expert-led review, and dedicated Q&A session. The workshop is spread across two days to fit the schedule of a busy coach. (5 Hours Total)
Participants will be tested on the material following the course and must achieve a passing score to attain their USATF Marathon Specialist certificate.

  • Introduction and History of the Marathon
  • Foundations of Marathon Training Physiology
  • Fatigue and Recovery Strategies for Effective Marathon Training
  • Applied Marathon Training Principles
  • Integrating Ancillary Factors for Personalized Plans
  • Marathon Nutrition and Hydration Planning for Coaches
  • Psychological Strategies for Marathon Coaching
  • Tapering Strategies for Marathon Athletes
  • Altitude and Heat Training for Marathon Coaches
  • Race-Day Ready
Requirements
To earn your USATF Marathon Specialist certificate, individuals must:
  • Complete all self-paced online units prior to the workshop.
  • Attend all live workshop sessions.
  • Achieve a passing score of 80% or higher on the final exam (access provided post workshop).
Eligibility Requirements
  • Age: Must be 18 years or older
  • Membership: Must be a current USATF member
