COVID-19 Protocols for the 2022 USATF Cross Country Championships

Due to new data on vaccine effectiveness with Delta and Omicron variants, for USATF sanctioned events that take place on or after January 7, 2022, being fully vaccinated no longer exempts select participants from the requirement to produce a negative COVID-19 test. Participants must wear masks at all times except when warming up, competing, eating, or drinking. Social distancing must be observed.

All athlete participants and medical providers must produce a negative COVID-19 test that meets one of the two options below:

  • Negative COVID-19 nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT), performed within 3 calendar days of the event.
    • The NAAT can be an at-home test if the test is FDA authorized and must include a digital or printed results form linked to the test (i.e., cannot be a picture of a test strip or reader).
    • Note that NAATs can use many different methods to detect the virus, with the most common being RT-PCR and LAMP. A listing of NAAT types from the CDC can be found here.
  • Negative COVID-19 antigen test, performed within 3 calendar days of the event.
    • Antigen tests will only be accepted if the county of the event has a state government reported COVID-19 all-test positivity rate 7 days prior to the event of less than 5%. If this criterion is not met, Option #1 must be used.
If the athlete had a confirmed COVID-19 test via NAAT or antigen testing within 90 days of the competition, the athlete will be cleared for competition without producing a negative COVID-19 test if all of the following criteria are met:
  • It has been at least 14 days since the positive COVID-19 test
  • It has been at least 24 hours with no fever without the use of fever reducing medicine
  • Other symptoms of COVID-19 are resolved (except for loss of taste or smell, which may take longer to resolve)

Note that COVID-19 antibody testing is NOT currently accepted to meet the negative COVID-19 test criterion.

These protocols are subject to change. Last updated 12/23/2021.

Course Description/Maps

The course is located in Mission Bay Park at the very south end of East Mission Bay Drive, adjacent to the San Diego Mission Bay Resort. This is known as the “Tecolote Shores” section of the park. If you are driving, the course can be reached by taking Interstate 5, exit at Sea World Drive and go west, turn right on East Mission Bay Drive, and drive approximately 1/3 mile to park.

The races will be run over a spectator-friendly, European-style 2,000-meter grass loop running along East Mission Bay Park. The terrain during the first 1,000 meters of the loop is primarily flat and very fast. During the second 1,000 meters of the loop the course includes a series of five small hills. The average width of the course is 10 meters and there are a few sections where the course briefly narrows to about 5 meters in width. This course was also used for the 2008, 2011, and 2020 USATF Cross Country Championships.

PARKING INFORMATION

On-site parking at the Mission Bay Course will be limited to meet officials, VIP, media, and medical personnel. Only vehicles with displayed parking passes will be allowed into the parking facility.

Free spectator and athlete parking is available at the northeast corner of East Mission Bay Drive & Sea World Drive. There is also parking along East Mission Bay Drive. Anyone parking along East Mission Bay Dr. should back into the parking spots so they are not ticketed.
