Serena Burla is married to her former Mizzou teammate, Adam Burla, who competed in shot put. Their son, Boyd, was born in December 2008. Her father, Chris Ramsay, has been a coach of high school track and cross country in Waukesha, WI for over forty years. She is the third of four children. In 2010, Burla was diagnosed with a rare cancerous tumor in her hamstring and told she may never walk again. The tumor was removed that year but returned and had to be removed again in 2017. Burla returned to running and competing at the elite level after surgery.
