Kyra Jefferson is the daughter of Thomas Jefferson and Michele Watkins. She started competing in track and field when she was six years old, starting out in the heptathlon and then transitioning to sprints when she was thirteen. Jefferson competed in the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships.
