Each month, the USATF Youth Programs department recognizes our youth athletes, coaches, and other contributors throughout the nation.
Shirley Crowe December 5, 1931 — February 24, 2024 The USATF Youth Department honors and mourns the loss of Shirley Crowe, a USATF Masters level Official and long-time supporter of the USATF Youth programs.
Shirley Crowe spent his retirement years as a certified Master level Official and a combined event referee for USATF and NCAA. He also worked with Texas UIL with site prep and venue improvement. Most of his later years were spent assisting Humble ISD with Turner Stadium, making it one of the nation’s premier track and field facilities. His efforts were recognized by his induction into many Hall of Fame classes within different organizations. He mentored many new officials by example, encouragement, knowledge, and love of the sport. One of his highlights of his officiating career was being selected as an Official for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia in the Heptathlon and Decathlon. Shirley’s contribution and commitment to the USATF youth programs was legendary. He worked with track and field into his nineties until lack of mobility made it too difficult to continue his officiating duties. Shirley will be remembered as a pioneer in the world of USATF officiating and his contributions will be missed.
If you have a Youth Athlete, Youth Coach, or Youth Program Contributor that should be recognized in the Youth Spotlight area, please submit information and photos to youthprograms@usatf.org for consideration.
