On Your Marks with Max

Dear USATF Member,

As we close the curtain on a historic year, I’d like to take a moment to look back on the accomplishments made by Team USATF in 2024. It’s been a year of remarkable achievements, personal bests, and historic milestones.

USATF had an extraordinary showing in Paris with 34 medals - 14 gold, 11 silver, and 8 bronze - two world records, four Olympic records, and four American records. We cheered as Gabby Thomas executed a triple crown for the ages, as Noah Lyles brought the Olympic 100m title back to the U.S., as Ryan Crouser pulled off a never-before-seen three-peat in the shot put, as the women’s 4x400 continued their eight-Games streak of dominance, and as Quincy Wilson became our youngest-ever male track and field gold medalist. We cheered as USATF made history.

It wasn’t just the elite athletes in the spotlight this summer. The USATF U20 team topped the medal tables in Lima with 16 medals - half of which were gold - and an American U20 record by Ja’Kobe Tharp in the 110 hurdles. At the World Masters Athletics Championships, USATF Masters athletes made a statement sitting atop the medal tables with 247 medals, five world records, and 25 American records.

USATF’s accomplishments extended outside of the oval. At just 25, Fiona O’Keeffe became the youngest woman to win the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Marathon, and she did so with a Trials record. Our MUT athletes’ performances were highlighted by a women’s team bronze at the IAU 100K World Championships and a men’s team bronze at the Vertical Mountain event.

As we head into a new year there is so much to look forward to. On January 1, 2025, we will take a historic step as the U.S. Paralympics Track & Field program becomes part of USATF, uniting all U.S. track and field athletes as part of one organization.

At Annual Meeting, your voices were heard as committee representatives and seats on the Board of Directors were elected. With that, I’m excited to welcome three-time Olympian Curt Clausen, who brings a wealth of knowledge on and off of the field of play, as the new USATF President.

While 2024 will be a tough year to top, I look forward to seeing how we can make 2025 even better.

Happy Holidays,
