Indianapolis to Host USATF Indoor Championships in 2027 and 2028

INDIANAPOLIS — USA Track & Field today announced that the USATF Indoor Championships will return to Indianapolis for two consecutive years, with the nation’s top track and field athletes competing at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in 2027 and 2028. The championships will be held in partnership with Indiana Sports Corp, which will serve as the Local Organizing Committee for both events.

The 2027 USATF Indoor Championships presented by Prevagen will be held February 19-21, 2027, followed by the 2028 championships February 18-20, 2028, at the Indiana Farm Bureau Fall Creek Pavilion at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

The return to Indianapolis carries special significance for the sport. Next year will mark the 40th anniversary of the inaugural IAAF World Indoor Championships which were held at the Hoosier Dome in 1987.

However, this will be the first time the USATF Indoor Championships have been held in Indy. They are coming to a venue that has quickly established itself as a premier indoor track and field destination. The Indiana Farm Bureau Fall Creek Pavilion has hosted the Big Ten Indoor Championships, Hoosier State Relays and numerous collegiate and high school meets, as well as the 2026 USATF Indoor Combined Events Championships.

The championships also have a special connection to USA Track & Field. Indianapolis is home to USATF’s national office.

The 2028 USATF Indoor Championships will carry additional significance as a selection event for the 2028 World Athletics Indoor Championships, giving American athletes an opportunity to compete for national titles while pursuing a place on Team USATF for the global championship, which will be held March 3-5, 2028, in Odisha, India.

“We are excited to bring the USATF Indoor Championships back to Indianapolis for the next two years and, in doing so, return to a place that holds such an important place in our sport’s history,” said Max Siegel, CEO of USA Track & Field. “Indianapolis is home to USA Track & Field, so bringing our national indoor championship to our own backyard makes this especially meaningful for our organization. The first World Indoor Championships were held here in 1987, and the Indiana State Fairgrounds has continued to be a great home for track and field. Over the past several years, we have seen the Fairgrounds establish itself as a destination for athletes at every level, from high school and collegiate competition to national championships. We are grateful to Indiana Sports Corp and our partners across the state for helping us bring these championships to our hometown.”

“Bringing the USATF Indoor Championships to the Indiana State Fairgrounds is a major moment for our venue and for the future of indoor track and field in Indianapolis,” said LeRoy Lewis III, Director of Community and Media Engagement for the Indiana State Fairgrounds. “We’ve built the Fall Creek Pavilion to compete on the national stage, and now the nation’s best athletes will compete here.”

“Indianapolis has a proud history of hosting world-class events across the Olympic movement, and it is especially meaningful to bring the USATF Indoor Championships to the city USA Track & Field has called home for nearly 40 years,” said Patrick Talty, president of Indiana Sports Corp. “We look forward to partnering with USATF and the Indiana State Fairgrounds, a proven championship venue, to create an exceptional experience for the athletes, coaches and fans.”

As the Local Organizing Committee, Indiana Sports Corp will lead the local effort to host the championships, working alongside USA Track & Field, the Indiana State Fairgrounds and community partners to deliver a first-class experience for athletes, coaches, officials, fans and visitors.

Both the 2027 and 2028 USATF Indoor Championships will be broadcast nationally on NBC and streamed live on USATF.TV.

Additional information regarding athlete registration, competition schedules, tickets and the selection process for the 2028 World Athletics Indoor Championships will be announced at a later date.
