INDIANAPOLIS -- The 2028 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track & Field will return to historic Hayward Field at the University of Oregon in Eugene, June 17-22, 2028. USA Track & Field and the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee announced today that the nation's top track and field athletes will compete for places on Team USA for the LA 2028 Olympic Games.
The 2028 edition will mark the sixth consecutive U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track & Field to be held in Eugene. The meet will once again be organized by Eugene-based nonprofit TrackTown USA, whose name reflects the city and surrounding area’s reputation as one of the world's premier track and field destinations. Eugene has selected every U.S. Olympic track and field team since 2008, while Hayward Field has hosted the USATF Outdoor Championships 10 times, most recently in 2025, and will do so again in 2027.
"TrackTown USA and Eugene's record of success in selecting America's best track and field athletes speaks for itself in the 52 Olympic gold medals U.S. athletes have won since 2008," said USA Track & Field CEO Max Siegel. "There is no doubt these Trials will produce a team that is built for LA."
"TrackTown USA is honored to welcome back the nation's best athletes, coaches, and fans to Hayward Field at The University of Oregon for the 2028 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field," said TrackTown USA CEO Michael Reilly. "Our community looks forward to hosting an amazing celebration of the sport and the world’s No. 1 team.”
The announcement comes on the heels of a successful World Athletics U20 Championships, which welcomed more than 1,500 athletes from more than 140 countries to Eugene. The city also hosted the 2022 World Athletics Championships—the first and only time the event has been held in the United States—further cementing its reputation as TrackTown USA.
The 2028 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track & Field will feature a new six-day competition format, down from eight days in previous editions. The revised schedule follows consultation with athletes who expressed interest in a more efficient selection process, particularly with the Trials taking place less than a month before the Olympic Games. Team selection for the decathlon, heptathlon and 10,000 meters will also be held earlier in the spring to allow additional recovery time before the Games. The date and location for those competitions will be announced soon. Qualifying for the 2028 Paralympic Games will be determined at a later date.
Earlier this year, USA Track & Field and the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee announced that St. Louis will host the 2028 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Marathon on March 25, 2028.
The 2028 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track & Field will be presented across NBC, Peacock, and NBCSN. NBCUniversal is the exclusive U.S. media rights holder for LA28 and all Olympic Games through 2036. Qualifying standards and qualifying windows will be announced in 2027.
