USA Track & Field Announces Jess McClain will step up to Tokyo Marathon Roster

INDIANAPOLIS – USA Track & Field announced today that Jess McClain, formerly an alternate for the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 Marathon team, will step up to represent Team USATF at the September event. This roster change comes following Betsy Saina’s announcement that she will decline her spot as she’s expecting a baby this fall.

McClain was seventh at the Boston Marathon in April with a time of 2:22:43, and has a personal best of 2:25:46 that earned her fourth place at last year's Olympic Trials marathon. She was also fourth in the 10,000 at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials - Track & Field and placed third at the NACAC Cross Country Championships in 2019.

This will mark the first time McClain will represent the U.S. on the global stage, and she will join another first-time international team member, Erika Kemp, and Budapest 23 marathoner Susanna Sullivan on the Tokyo 25 squad.

“We want to extend our congratulations and best wishes to Betsy and her growing family on their exciting news and to Jess McClain on her selection” said USATF Director of Long Distance Running Programs Amy Begley. “Jess has consistently been at the top of the field in the marathon for the last few years, and we are thrilled to see her represent Team USATF on the world stage in Tokyo.”

“I am so honored and thrilled to represent Team USATF in the marathon at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September,” said Jess McClain of her selection. “To be able to race alongside my Brooks teammates, Erika and Susanna, as we contend to bring medals back home is also a dream come true.”

The women’s marathon is set to take place on the morning of September 14 with the men’s team–Clayton Young, CJ Albertson, and Reed Fischer–to follow on September 15. More information about the full marathon roster can be found here.
