Johnson's American road mile record earns her USATF Athlete of the Week honors

INDIANAPOLIS -- Bettering the American women's record* in the road mile, Sinclaire Johnson (Portland, OR/USATF Oregon) earned recognition as the 44th USATF Athlete of the Week award winner for 2025, her second AOW award of the year.

Johnson, who earned AOW honors after setting an American mile record on the track on July 19 at the London Diamond League meet, added the road mile American record to her resume with a 4:21.86 to win the Kalakaua Merrie Mile in Honolulu.

That took more than two seconds off the ratified record of 4:23.98 by Krissy Gear in April and put her at No. 2 on the all-time world performer list behind only the world record of 4:20.98 by Ethiopia's Diribe Welteji in 2023. Johnson was the 2022 USATF outdoor champion in the 1500 and has represented Team USATF in the 1500 at the last three World Athletics Championships. She was sixth at this year's World Indoor Championships.

Other top performances from last week:

Alan Evans, 62, had the highest men's age grade score at the USATF Masters Half Marathon Championships with an 87.36% for his 1:23:03 time.

Jeannie Rice, 77, had an age grade score of 96.48% at the USATF Masters Half Marathon Championships with a 1:48:30, the highest score of all women's competitors.

Quaid Berger was the boys' 15-18 individual champion at the USATF Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships, running 17:22.5 for 5K to win by almost 30 seconds in snowy conditions.

Morgan Delaney won the girls' 15-18 individual title at the USATF Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships by 26 seconds with a 19:24.2 5K in snowy conditions.
