HUNTSVILLE, Alabama – A world record in the women's sprints and a pair of American records in the 4x100 relay topped the second day of competition at the 2025 USATF Masters Outdoor Championships.
The top individual performance of the day went to 85-year-old Kathy Bergen (SC Striders), who broke the world record in the women's 85-89 100 with a 17.97 (wind -0.8), bettering the old record of 18.14. She also shattered the previous American record of 21.61.
Field event action was highlighted by 87-year-old Elsbeth Padia (Unattached), who threw the shot 8.16/26-9.25 to break the American record in the women's 85-89 division.
An Atlanta Track Club foursome of Jameen Mathews, Inga McIntyre, Amanda Roberts, and Angela Myers broke the women's 45-49 4x100 relay American record with a 51.95 clocking, taking 2.03 seconds off the previous record. The club also took relay gold in three other age groups.
In the men's 60-64 4x100, Southwest Sprinters TC clipped .32 seconds off the American record as Michael Bradecamp, Francois Boda, David Jones, and John Campbell zipped to a 48.01. Campbell and Jones had earlier finished 1-2 in the 100, with Campbell running 12.23 to Jones' 12.49. Atlanta Track Club captured five of the age group golds in men's club relay action.
Marianna Martino of the High Altitude Racewalk Team had one of the top performances in the women's 5000 racewalk to open the day's competition, going 34:58.31 to win the 75-79 division and miss the American record by only 24 seconds, while David Swarts was one of the top men's performers, taking the 60-64 title in 28:16.34. Also of note, 74-year-old Raymond Funkhouser, a five-time U.S. national team member in the 1980s and '90s, was the runner-up in the 70-74 division.
Former Jamaican international Ian Weakly of the Atlanta Track Club, who earned bronze in the 400 hurdles at the 2002 Commonwealth Games and bronze in the 4x400 at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, won the men's 50-54 400 by almost three seconds in 53.06. The men's 55-59 title went to Lee Bridges (Unite4), who was sixth at the 1989 TAC (now USATF) Championships and sixth at the NCAA Championships, in 54.36.
