Wilson's world U18 best earns him USATF Athlete of the Week honors

INDIANAPOLIS — Shattering his own world U18 best in the men's 400 meters, Quincy Wilson (Bowie, Maryland/USATF Potomac Valley) earned recognition as the 25th USATF Athlete of the Week award winner for 2024.

Wilson, who will be a junior at the Bullis School in Potomac, Maryland, this fall, sped to a 44.20 to win the 400 at the Holloway Pro Classic in Gainesville, Florida, clipping .39 off the previous world U18 best he set in the semifinal at the Olympic Trials. His time also made him the second fastest U20 performer ever, with the third-fastest performance.

Named to the U.S. Olympic team as a member of the relay pool, Wilson will be the youngest man ever to represent the United States in track and field at the Games if he sees action in Paris. He placed sixth at the Trials and has set three world U18 records in the one-lapper this season.

Other top performances from last week:

  • Myrle Mensey swept the women's 75-79 throwing event titles at the USATF Masters Championships in Sacramento. She won five golds and set world records in the hammer and weight throws, and an American record in the shot put.
  • Rachel Smith won the women's title by 17 seconds at the USATF 8km Championships, clocking 25:40.
  • Ahmed Muhumed was the men's victor at the USATF 8km Championships, running 22:26 to win by one second.
  • Hakim McMorris won the individual men's decathlon title at the Thorpe Cup with a PB score of 8,163, leading Team USATF to a resounding victory over host Germany.

Now in its 23rd year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week when there are high-level competitions and features the athlete on USATF.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
