Dakotah Lindwurm was the top American finisher Sunday in the women's marathon, placing 12th in the final track and field event of an epic Olympic Games that saw Team USA soar to unprecedented heights. Running in a field chock-a-block with the world's top female long distance athletes, Lindwurm moved into the top 15 early in the 26.2 mile race, and by the halfway mark she was third in 1:13:25 in the midst of a large pack. As the pace started to pick up, Lindwurm battled to stay in the lead group, but Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands pulled away from all but three other women, outkicking them on the way to an Olympic record 2:22:55 victory that gave her her first gold of the Games after earning bronze in the 5000 and 10,000. Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa also bettered the previous Games record with a 2:22:58 for silver, and Kenya's Hellen Obiri took bronze in 2:23:10. Lindwurm crossed the line in 2:26:44. Emily Sisson was 23rd in 2:29:53, while Fiona O'Keeffe started but quickly exited the race due to injury.
