Nuguse's American records* earn him USATF Athlete of the Week honors

INDIANAPOLIS — Bettering American indoor records in the men's 1,500m and mile at the Millrose Games, Yared Nuguse (Boulder, Colorado/USATF Colorado) earned recognition as the fifth USATF Athlete of the Week award winner for 2023.

Nuguse, who two weeks ago bettered the American indoor record in the 3,000m with a 7:28.23 at Boston, ran a masterful race and used a sizzling kick to take down the mile AR that was set 18 years ago to the day by Bernard Lagat. Nuguse's 3:47.38 was also the second-fastest time ever run indoors, and he went through 1,500m in 3:33.22 en route to claim Lagat's AR at that distance. Covering the final quarter mile in 54.23, Nuguse also clocked the second-fastest American mile ever, indoors or outdoors.

Other top performances from last week:

  1. Alicia Monson bettered the American indoor record in the women's 3,000m with an 8:25.05 to win the Millrose Games. Her time puts her at No. 6 on the all-time world indoor performer list and is the fastest ever by an American woman, indoors or outdoors.
  2. Abby Steiner broke the American indoor record in the women's 300m with a 35.54 to win at the Millrose Games. She chopped .17 off the existing AR and moved to third on the all-time world indoor performer list.
  3. Chase Ealey had the third farthest indoor women's shot put performance ever by an American, winning the Millrose Games with a world-leading 20.03m/65-8.75.
  4. Ryan Crouser opened his season with a world-leading 22.58m/74-1 to win the Millrose Games. Only he and Randy Barnes have ever thrown farther indoors.
