Allman's world-leading discus earns her USATF Athlete of the Week honors

INDIANAPOLIS — Recording the third-farthest women's discus throw ever by an American, Valarie Allman (Austin, Texas/USATF New York) earned recognition as the 13th USATF Athlete of the Week award winner for 2023.

Allman, the Olympic champion at Tokyo and holder of the American record, unleashed a world-leading 70.25m/230-5 effort in the fifth round at the Triton Invitational in La Jolla, California, her third best throw ever and the No. 3 all-time U.S. performance. She set the AR of 71.46m/234-5 at the same meet last year. A bronze medalist at last summer's World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Allman now owns the top 10 marks ever by an American woman and has six career throws of 70m/229-8 or better.

Other top performances from last week:

  • Aleia Hobbs ran a world-leading 10.87 in the women's 100m at the Willis Invitational in Baton Rouge.
  • Hana Moll won the girls' pole vault at the Arcadia Invitational with a clearance at 4.57m/15-0, the highest outdoor mark ever by a prep athlete. Only her twin sister, Amanda, has ever gone higher in high school.
  • Simeon Birnbaum ran the second-fastest high school boys' 3,200m ever with an 8:34.10 to win at the Arcadia Invitational.

Now in its 22nd year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week when there are high-level competitions and features the athlete on USATF.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
