Indianapolis, Indiana — Over 1,400 young athletes aged 8-18 will land on Staten Island to set off the 2022 USATF National Youth Indoor Championships this weekend. Set for Friday, March 18 - Sunday, March 20, the event will run at the NYC Parks Ocean Breeze Athletic complex’s 135,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art indoor track and field facility. Local clubs Prospect Park Track Club and Ocean Breeze Wave Runners Track Club hope to take advantage of their local turf to bring home medals and defend national titles. Founded in 1970, the Prospect Park Track Club (PPTC) is Brooklyn’s largest and most active running club, with a membership that extends well beyond the neighborhoods surrounding Prospect Park. The Ocean Breeze Wave Runners Track Club was established with a universal belief in athletics as a stepping stone for success, to promote, develop and empower youth through physical training and mental discipline. The Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex has played host to numerous USATF events including the 2019 USATF Indoor Championships and the 2016-2019 USATF Youth Indoor Championships, as well as USATF New York Association championship meets. The athletic complex was funded by the City's PlaNYC initiative, with construction managed in coordination with the New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC). The facility has become a premier destination for athletic events, drawing competitors from around the country. The elite-level hydraulically-banked competition track can be converted from eight to six lanes, can incline up to 4.5 feet, and has commanding views of the nearby Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and even the Freedom Tower in lower Manhattan. The warm-up area has a 150-meter loop Mondo track surface and also features fitness, cardio, and multi-purpose rooms. The top six athletes in each individual and relay event earn medals and All-American honors. The winner of each event will also receive a trophy. The competition schedule may be found here.
