Jaylan McConico won the men's 60m hurdles at the BoXX United Manchester meet in England, the first stop on the 2022 World Athletics Indoor Tour, clocking 7.70. Chase Ealey was second in the women's shot put with a throw of 18.49m/60-8.
Nyckoles Harbor, 16, sprinted to a 20.79 in the heats of the 200m at the Texas Tech Under Armour High School Classic in Lubbock, the fastest time ever run indoors by a U18 athlete. Harbor, who is also a football star at Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington, D.C., won the 60m with a 6.73.
John Rambo, the 1964 Olympic Games bronze medalist in the men's high jump, passed away recently in Paramount, California at age 78. Rambo, a star basketball player and track and field athlete at Long Beach Poly High School, won the NCAA high jump title for Long Beach State in 1964 with a 7-0.25 clearance and then went over 2.16m/7-1 on his final attempt at Tokyo to claim bronze. He went on to win AAU indoor national golds in 1967 and 1969 and finished his career with a personal best of 7-3. Rambo was drafted in the sixth round in 1965 by the NBA St. Louis Hawks, and was a well-known coach in the Long Beach area, hosting basketball and track and field camps for kids. He was inducted into the Long Beach State Sports Hall of Fame in 2002 and is also a member of the Long Beach City College Hall of Champions.
Israel Oloyede of Grand Canyon University and Mississippi's Shey Taiwo had huge efforts in the men's and women's weight throws to top collegiate indoor action over the weekend. Oloyede, who was 11th in the Olympic Trials hammer last summer and was the silver medalist at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships for Arizona, hit 24.45m/80-2.75 at Albuquerque to take over the No. 4 spot on the all-time collegiate performer list. His mark also made him the No. 9 all-time U.S. performer. Taiwo, the NCAA hammer silver medalist and indoor weight bronze medalist last year, jumped to No. 7 on the all-time collegiate performer list with her 24.11m/79-1.25 at Vanderbilt. In other throws news, shot put Olympian and reigning NCAA indoor and outdoor champion Adelaide Aquilla of Ohio State extended her indoor lifetime best to 19.09m/62-7.75 at South Carolina. On the track, Kentucky's Kennedy Lightner won the men's 200m at the Red Raider Invitational in Lubbock with a 20.52 and anchored his 4x400m relay to victory with a sizzling 44.68 split. Notre Dame's Yared Nuguse, who qualified for the U.S. Olympic team in the men's 1,500m last year with a third-place finish at the Trials, won the mile on his home track with a 3:54.46, a lifetime best by more than three seconds that made him the No. 10 all-time indoor collegiate indoor performer.
Fresh off running the fastest 500m ever by a high school boy last week, Will Sumner of Woodstock High School in Georgia zipped to a 1:15.58 to win the 600m at the CYUP Misfits Invitational in Chicago and claim the prep indoor best at that distance. Sumner is the son of 1995 Team USATF World Indoor Championships 800m runner Brad Sumner and Tosha (Woodward) Sumner, who had a lifetime best of 2:00.46 in the 800m and finished seventh at that distance at the 1996 Olympic Trials. At the New Balance Games at the Armory in New York City, Sophia Gorriaran won the girls' 600m in 1:27.70, the No. 7 performance in high school history.
