Future stars lit up the track on day two of the 2022 USATF National Youth Outdoor Championships

NEW YORK, New York — Field events and distance finals took center stage on day two of the USATF National Youth Outdoor Championships as athletes from all over the U.S. flocked to Icahn Stadium for the shot at a National title.

Highlighting the day early on was Greater Lowell Road Runners’ Michael Studer, who ran away with a major victory in the boys 11-12 division 3000m. He led from the gun and never wavered, finishing with a time of 9:44.91 - 30 seconds faster than his nearest competitor.

Emma Zawatski had a huge race as the only girl in the 15-16 division to cross the line in under 10 minutes in the 3000m, winning her division in 9:57.04. Zawatski left no room for doubt as she bested the field by 40 seconds. She will leave the USATF National Youth Outdoor Championships with a major personal record and a medal to match.

The Bronx Tigers TC’s Khalid Rucker had quite the day in the boys 8 & under shot put, landing a throw out past the 5m mark to win the competition with a 5.35m throw. Three of Rucker’s six attempts would have been far enough to take the win, with one other athlete notching a 5m throw in VELOCITY TRACK CLUB NEW YORK’s Mason Gethers throwing 5.00m even for second.

Athletes advanced in the preliminary rounds of the 80m hurdles, 100m hurdles, 110m hurdles, and 400m. They’ll compete in the finals on Saturday, July 2.
