Christie, Melville win 20K walk titles

HAUPPAUGE, New York — Nick Christie and Miranda Melville turned in dominant performances to claim USATF 20 km Race Walk Championships titles Sunday in Hauppauge, New York. Christie won his 12th overall U.S. title with a 1:24:36, his third-fastest time ever at the distance, while Melville won her fourth overall national title with a 1:36:01 clocking.

Christie went to an early lead on the 2 km loop course, putting nine seconds on the nearest challenger through the first circuit and then tacking on time every loop through 10 km, where he was 1:46 clear of Canada's Ben Thorne, who was competing as a guest. After the first 10 km in 41:32, Christie eased off the gas a bit and cruised in with a 43:04 over the final half of the race to win by 2:53 over Thorne. The second U.S. men's finisher, Dan Nehnevaj, crossed the line in 1:30:08, with Emmanuel Corvera completing the podium in third at 1:32:13.

Melville and Maria Michta-Coffey were virtually side-by-side through the first 6 km before Melville started to ease ahead and Michta-Coffey dropped off the early pace. Melville hit 10 km in 47:08, 54 seconds ahead of guest competitor Natalia Alfonzo of Venezuela, and she covered the final 10 km in 48:13. Michta-Coffey was the U.S. runner-up in 1:39:55 and Stephanie Casey placed third in 1:40:40.
