INDIANAPOLIS -- Continuing a series of stellar performances in 2021, Athing Mu (College Station, Texas) won the fan vote by the narrowest of margins to earn the 4th USATF Athlete of the Week award for 2021 after bettering the American U20 record in the women’s 400m. Mu, a freshman at Texas A&M, first stamped her mark on the national and international scene at the 2019 USATF Indoor Championships, where she set an American record in the 600m. This season she has already clocked the fastest 600m in the world and has the fastest 800m for a U20 athlete, and she added a world-leading 50.52 in the 400m Saturday at the Charlie Thomas Invitational. Mu’s time bettered the existing American U20 record of 50.82, set by Sanya Richards in 2004 at Fayetteville and ranks her as the No. 4 all-time U.S. performer at all levels.
