Maggie Malone breaks javelin American record at USATF Chula Vista Field Festival

CHULA VISTA -- A pending American record in the women’s javelin and a world-leading high jump were the top highlights as field events took center stage at the USATF Chula Vista Field Festival, the 10th stop on the USATF Journey to Gold - Tokyo Outdoor Track & Field Series.

Undefeated coming into today’s meet and owner of the farthest throw by an American in 2021, Rio Olympian Maggie Malone blasted a 66.82m/219-3 in the third round of the women’s javelin to (pending ratification) take down Kara Winger’s American record of 66.67m/218-8, set in 2010 at the USATF Championships in Des Moines. Ariana Ince placed third with a best of 60.26m/197-8, and Avionne Allgood set a season best of 58.74m/192-8 for fourth.

Clearing 2.02m/6-7.5 on her first attempt, women’s high jumper Vashti Cunningham took over the world outdoor lead for 2021 and moved to No. 4 on the all-time U.S. performer list. Cunningham, the 2016 World Indoor gold medalist and an eight-time U.S. champion, cleared 1.93m/6-4 on her second attempt and then passed at 1.99m/6-6.25 to watch her training partner, Jelena Rowe, take three shots at it. Rowe ultimately placed second with her make at 1.93m.

For the first time in recent memory, three American men long jumped further than 27 feet with a legal wind in a single competition, and the best of those efforts was an 8.39m/27-6.5 from reigning Olympic champion Jeff Henderson on his first attempt. Marquis Dendy twice hit 8.29m/27-2.5, one of them wind legal, to place second on the countback ahead of Corey Crawford, who matched that distance to set a lifetime best in third. Crawford only had one other legal jump, a windy 8.21m/26-11.5 on his opener.

Almost three hours into the competition, the women’s long jump reached a heated crescendo in the final round, none more on fire than Nigeria’s Ese Brume, who sailed a national record and world-leading 7.17m/23-6.25. Many-time World and Olympic champion Brittney Reese was fifth entering the last round and produced her best of the year, albeit wind-aided, going 7.10m/23-3.5 with a 2.3 tailwind to take second. Reese also jumped a legal 6.83m/22-5 in round four. Third went to Chantel Malone of the British Virgin Islands, also surpassing 7m, landing at 7.07m/23-2.5 on the strength of the maximum allowable wind. Top efforts also came from Sha’Keela Saunders, fourth with a windy 6.90m/22-7.75, and Malaina Payton, who set a lifetime best with her 6.89m/22-7.25 on her first jump to place fifth.

World leader Rudy Winkler uncorked a 78.78m/258-5 on his first attempt that held up to win the men’s hammer, but Alex Young had to be the happiest man in the field after notching three throws beyond his previous lifetime best, capped by a 78.30m/256-11 in round four that placed him second and also earned him the Tokyo qualifying standard. Sean Donnelly finished third, hitting his best of 76.98m/252-7 on his first try.

Winning his second Journey to Gold series meet of the season, Donald Scott led from the first round of the men’s triple jump, topped by a wind-aided 17.22m/56-6 in round four. Scott, winner of the last two Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships golds, also had a wind-legal 16.93m/55-6.5 in the last round. Chris Carter finished as the runner-up with a best of 16.83m/55-2.75.

It took six rounds for Michael Shuey to get revved up in the men’s javelin, but on his final attempt he had an 80.32m/263-6 that was easily enough to win over Riley Dolezal, the leader up to that point with a best of 77.20m/253-3. U.S. leader Curtis Thompson was third at 75.93m/249-1.

Nigeria’s Chioma Onyekwere, the 2018 African champion and 2019 All-Africa Games winner who threw collegiately for Maryland, won the women’s discus with her third-round toss of 61.75m/202-7. Micaela Hazlewood was the top American, finishing second with a lifetime best 60.52m/198-7 on her last attempt.

In the women’s triple jump, Jamaica’s Sabina Allen and Imani Oliver traded the lead, with Allen getting the upper hand and winning at 14.20m/46-7.25. Oliver was second at 13.81m/45-3.75, a season best, as former American record holder Tori Franklin had foul trouble and ended up third with a best of 13.79m/45-3.

Sanghyeok Woo of South Korea won the men’s high jump, equaling his season best of 2.26m/7-5, with 2012 Olympic silver medalist Erik Kynard and Tyler Arroyo both clearing 2.20m/7-2.5 for second and third.
