USATF Week of Thanks - Member Spotlight: Josh Rorem and Katie Rorem-Godin

As a part of the USATF Week of Thanks campaign, we are spotlighting some of USATF's most dedicated members with a short feature (Humans of New York-style) on USATF.org and our social media accounts.

Here is our sixth feature with the father-daughter duo Josh Rorem and Katie Rorem-Godin, both of whom have spent their lives in the sport and are now certified officials from Huntington Beach, California and members of the Southern California Association.

IMG_0268.jpgKatie: “I first joined USATF when I began competing in Track & Field as a sophomore in high school. I continued competing in pole vault through high school and college and for a few years afterwards. During my competitive years, my father became a USATF official. When I was done competing, I turned to officiating through USATF as a way to stay involved in the sport and connected with the many people I had met. Plus, officiating was a fun activity that my dad and I could do together. That was more than a decade ago. Over the years, my dad has mentored me and helped me grow into a knowledgeable and capable official. Even today, I regularly still see fellow competitors, coaches, and others I first met back in my competition days. Officiating with USATF has not only given me the opportunity to stay involved with the sport I love, but also a front-row seat to watch the sport grow. Along the way, my dad and I have had wonderful opportunities to officiate at National Championship meets together and we have developed some great friendships.

Officiating through USATF is an awesome way to get involved in Track & Field at any age. You get an inside and close-up view of meets and get to know competitors and other officials. And it is easy to get started.

I am most thankful for the wonderful memories that I have made with my father over our years officiating together with USATF.

My favorite experience with USATF is the magic I felt as part of the officiating crew at my first Outdoor National Championships in Sacramento. Though I was on the crew for high jump and my dad was with the Pole Vault crew, we were able to work a bit with both events. I met many super-experienced officials, learned a ton, and made some lasting friendships. The competition was impressive and I really had a fantastic time.”

Josh: “I am the loving dad to Katie Rorem-Godin, my oldest adult child. I first got involved with USATF when Katie was in high school and wanted to compete in track and field events beyond those offered at Marina High School. USATF provided the opportunity to compete on a national level and parents provided the support. I liked being at track meets and noticed that track and field officials got to be very close to the events. After becoming a USATF official I met many good quality people who also happened to be officials. When Katie became an official, officiating became even more fun. USATF has allowed us to spend time together even after your child grows up.”
