USATF mourns race walking pioneer A.C. Jaime

Indianapolis -- A.C. “Beto” Jaime, the founder of the South Texas Walking Club passed away on Thursday, July 23rd after a battle with COVID-19. He was 84.
 
Jaime was born in Premont, Texas on May 10, 1936, and moved to Pharr in 1958. In 1972, Jaime was elected the first Mexican-American mayor of Pharr. Following his retirement, he played an integral role in promoting race walking in the city. Jaime fought to get race walking into elementary schools’ physical education program throughout the Texas school system. He coached generations of student-athletes that claimed USATF Youth and Junior Olympic national titles and held numerous race walk clinics.

Jaime is survived by his wife, Dora, and six children.
