Scantling posts eighth best all-time U.S. heptathlon at USATF Indoor Combined Events Championships

ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND -- A day after Annie Kunz posted the eighth best all-time U.S. pentathlon total at USATF Indoor Combined Events Championships, Garrett Scantling did the same in the men’s heptathlon at the U.S. Naval Academy’s Wesley Brown Field House.

Through the first four events on Friday, Scantling (Unattached / Athens, Georgia) with 3,490 points, held a slim lead over Former Rice all-American Scott Filip (Dupage Track Club / Bloomingdale, Illinois) and Steven Bastien (Unattached / Ann Arbor, Michigan). Scantling, who is competing in 2020 after a three-year hiatus, dashed to a 6.93 in the 60m before long jumping 7.45m/24-5.5. A big 16.25m/53-3.75 in the shot put increased his lead, and he ended day one with a 1.99m/6-6.25 clearance in the high jump.

On Saturday, Scantling dominated the 60m hurdles clocking 7.91 to equal his personal best, ahead of Jack Flood (Unattached / Morrisville, North Carolina) in 8.10, to add 1,005 points to his day one total. He returned to the field, to win the pole vault by a foot with another personal best leap of 5.20m /17-0.75, and then polished off his best heptathlon effort ever with a 2:52.26 in the 1,000m to finish with 6,209 points.

Filip closed the day with 5,797 points for second place after clocking 8.15 in 60m hurdles and 2:46.79 in the 1000m. Flood tallied 5,714 points for third overall.
