DORENA, Oregon -- Olympic Trials marathon winner and 2016 Olympic marathon bronze medalist Galen Rupp ran the eighth-fastest U.S. men’s half marathon in any conditions Friday at the Row River Half Marathon, clocking 60:23 to turn back Japan’s Suguru Osako, who was second in 61:16. Australia’s Patrick Tiernan finished third in 66:43 after handling much of the early pacesetting duties. Friday marked the first time Rupp had run with anyone since the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Marathon on February 29, 2020. Rupp passed the 15-kilometer mark in 42:47, and then went through 10 miles in 45:54*, better than the existing American Record of 46:13, set in 1983 by Greg Meyer at Washington, D.C. From there, Rupp cruised through 20K in 57:17 and on to the finish in his second race at the distance this year. Only he and four other Americans have ever run faster in a half marathon, and under legal conditions Rupp’s time rates as the sixth-fastest U.S. performance ever. *All records are pending ratification.
