DES MOINES, Iowa -- Already the world leader in 2020 with the =3rd best mark ever at 22.91m/75-2, Ryan Crouser (Fayetteville, Arkansas) had four legal throws past 22.00m/72-2.25 to dominate the Drake Blue Oval Shot Put Showcase Presented by Mediacom.

The reigning Olympic gold medalist and the World Championships silver medalist last fall opened with a 22.56m/74-0.25 that turned out to be his best, and followed up with a 22.50m/73-10 before fouling his third attempt. Regrouping for the final three throws, Crouser hit a 22.08m/72-5.25 in the fourth stanza and 22.20m/72-10 in the penultimate round.

Last year’s NCAA indoor champion and indoor collegiate record holder Payton Otterdahl (Fargo, North Dakota) notched a season best in the opening round with a 21.14m/69-4.25 to take second over 2020’s world No. 2 Nick Ponzio (Phoenix, Arizona), who ended up third with a best of 20.76m/68-1.5 in the fifth round.
