The Difference Between Club Types

Competitive Club Membership

A Competitive Club is designed for clubs that actively train, practice, and compete under USA Track & Field. This club type provides the full suite of competitive, administrative, and insurance-related benefits needed to operate as an athletic program.

Competitive Clubs can:

  • Enter relay teams and have athletes officially represent the club at USATF Championships.
  • Receive General Liability Insurance coverage, with optional access to D&O insurance.
  • Access to Club’s own Management Area.
  • Access athlete membership reports.
  • Create and manage an official practice schedule.
  • Order Certificates of Insurance (COIs) for practice locations and facilities.
  • Be listed as a USATF Member Club on the national website.
  • Use the official USATF Member Club logo.
  • Access grant opportunities.
  • Receive a digital Club Membership Certificate.
  • Access additional Association-specific benefits.

Key Operational Note:

Competitive Clubs ARE allowed to host practices, because they have access to practice insurance.

Competitive Clubs CANNOT sanction events through their club membership.

- If they wish to host sanctioned events, they must request a sanction through their personal account, and will not receive discounted Association sanction fees.

Organizational Club Membership

An Organizational Club is intended for groups that want affiliation with USATF but do not train, host practices, or operate as a competitive team. This membership type offers a more administrative level of involvement.

Organizational Clubs can:

  • Be listed on the USATF website as an official organization.
  • Access the Organization Management Area.
  • Use the USATF Member Organization logo.
  • Receive discounts on sanction fees (based on Association offerings).
  • Receive a digital Member Organization Certificate.
  • Access Association-specific benefits.

Key Operational Note:

Organizational Clubs CAN sanction events directly through their membership type.

Organizational Clubs CANNOT host practices.

  • They do not receive general liability coverage or practice insurance and therefore cannot submit or approve practice schedules.
For Clubs that would like to host practices and also sanction events, they should elect to be “Both” competitive and organizational when creating their club membership.
