  • Expected Highlights and Team Selection & Qualifying Protocols: Up to 4 U.S. men and 4 U.S. women, depending on USATF team selection protocols, will qualify to compete for Team USA at the 2022 World Athletics Race Walk Team Championships in Muscat, Oman on March 4-5. Up to 3 U.S. men and women, depending on USATF and World Athletics team selection and qualifying protocols, will qualify for the 2022 World Track & Field Championships in Eugene, OR on July 15-24. Several of the favorites among the athletes expected to compete have local roots.
  • World Athletics World Race Walking Tour Bronze Label Event: This year’s Championships have been included in the World Athletics World Race Walking Tour as a Bronze Label Event, and there will be an international 35 km division, and other invitational events, where we expect several top male and female walkers from around the NACAC & South American Areas to compete in an attempt to qualify for both the World Championships in Eugene and the World Race Walk Team Championships in Oman.
  • Virtual Races: In an effort to include as many race walkers as possible in these still strange COVID-19 times, athletes may participate in the Open events (35 km, 20 km, 10 km, and 5 km) virtually on Sunday, January 16. Please note that while each participant’s time will be listed in the Event’s results, it will be listed separately and will not count towards any official results, standings, and/or awards against those racing in Santee. Athletes must enter using the paper entry described below, which can be obtained by contacting Jennifer Nanista Stephens at Nanista.Jennifer@gmail.com. The same entry fees and entry schedule apply to the Virtual events as the Open and Masters in-person events. All virtual events must be walked on race day - Sunday, January 16. A screenshot of the Garmin or Strava or whatever electronic device used to track the completed time AND distance must be sent to Jennifer prior to 5:00 p.m. Pacific on January 16.
  • COVID-19 Health & Safety Guidelines: Consistent with the current USATF Event Hosting guidelines for a Level 2 / Moderate Risk event, as well as both the San Diego County and California state protocols and guidelines, the following rules and procedures are some of those that will be in effect for this year’s Championships. Please note that these rules and protocols are subject to change on short notice; but changes, if they occur, will be immediately posted on USATF.org, as well as then-current registrants being notified.
    • All competitors will be required to meet the current CDC definition of fully vaccinated or produce 1 negative PCR Test (antigen or antibody tests not accepted), with the test administered within 7 days prior to the January 16 race and be able to provide proof of it.
