Biggest World Athletics Rankings Movers of the Week – 7/7/2026

by Lia Skoufos, MS

This article is part of a USATF Campus exclusive series to help understand the World Athletics Rankings. For track enthusiasts and elite athletes alike, this series aims to provide clarity, analysis, and education on all things World Rankings and how they impact Team USATF. For more information on how the World Rankings system works, see this article.

July 7, 2026

From June 30-July 7, one U.S. athlete in the top 100 of their respective event had the biggest absolute improvement to their World Ranking, improving by 22 spots.

At his first ever Diamond League meeting, Tate Taylor won the 200m in 19.75, becoming the fifth fastest man in the world this year and third fastest U20 athlete in history. En route to this victory, Taylor beat the world ranked #2, 4, 7, 8, 9, and 13 athletes in the 200m at the time. At only 18 years old, Taylor has not competed at many highly categorized competitions, which is why this win was so significant for his ranking. Previously, his ranking score comprised of the “A” category USATF Lone Star Grand Prix, semi-final and final of the “F” category USATF U20 Championships, “D” category Tom Jones Memorial, and a heat of the “B” category 2025 Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships. Despite running remarkable times at each of these competitions, Taylor was hampered by low placing scores. Semi-final rounds of a competition are only awarded a placing score in competitions above an “A” category. This means Taylor previously received none for two of his top five marks, which contrasts greatly with the 140 points given for this win.

Taylor’s ranking now comprises of five competitions from 2026, meaning his score can only improve as the season continues. We will hopefully see him continue to succeed at the international level as he and last week’s biggest world rankings mover, Blake Hamilton, have qualified for the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene.

When assessing improvement based on percentage increase in ranking (e.g. 2nd to 1st is a 50% improvement as is moving from 30th to 15th), Taylor’s move from 34th to 12th also showed the biggest improvement at 65%.
