INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Karissa Schweizer and Drew Hunter added their first road titles to already impressive résumés, winning the USATF 5 km Championships in Indianapolis on Saturday morning. Both also secured spots on Team USATF for the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Denmark this September.
The men’s race, which began at sunrise, opened at a controlled pace. A large pack led by Cooper Teare, Sean McGorty, and Bob Liking came through the first mile in 4:25. Near the two-mile mark, 2022 champion Abdihamid Nur surged to the front before Teare made a move, with Hunter covering as they passed two miles in 8:51.
With 800 meters remaining, Teare led a pack of nine into the closing stretch while Hunter waited on the outside. Inside the final 400 meters, Teare broke away slightly, but Dylan Jacobs, Sam Prakel, and Hunter stayed within striking distance. Four abreast in the closing meters, Hunter edged ahead to win in 13:28, with Jacobs second in the same time. Teare finished third, followed by Prakel in fourth.
“I feel like the whole weekend went exactly how I wanted it to,” said Hunter, who placed third at last month’s USATF 1 Mile Championships. “I haven’t raced this early before, but it was a great day and I’m proud to represent the U.S. in a few months.”
Hunter and Jacobs earned the two available spots for Team USATF in Copenhagen.
The women’s race, which started two minutes later, quickly separated as Indianapolis resident Emma Grace Hurley led Karissa Schweizer and Gracie Hyde through the first mile in 4:43. By two miles (9:47), Hurley and Schweizer had opened a small gap, while Olympic silver medalist Courtney Frerichs moved into contention behind Hyde.
Schweizer, a two-time Olympian, remained patient on Hurley’s shoulder before making her move with roughly 600 meters to go. She surged to the lead and created a decisive gap, crossing the line in 14:59. Hurley followed closely in 15:00, with Hyde third in 15:03 and Frerichs fourth in 15:06. “It went out really fast—I expected that,” said Schweizer. “I felt really good coming off the final turn and just committed to the move.”
Schweizer and Hurley earned the two 5 km team spots for Copenhagen. Hurley has already qualified in the half marathon, while Hyde—third here—also holds a team position via her runner-up finish at the USATF 1 Mile Championships. If any athletes decline their spots, Frerichs would be next in line for her first World Athletics Road Running Championships appearance.
