Records fall in Rocket City on day 1 of USATF Masters Outdoor Championships

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama – American records in the men's shot put and women's 4x800 relay got the 2025 USATF Masters Outdoor Championships under way Thursday at Milton Frank Stadium. The first day of competition also featured a slate of other competitive relay, field event and combined event finals.

The first national record of the Championships went to Phil Shipp of the Arizona Desert Throws, who shattered the American men's 90-94 record in the shot put with a 10.20/33-5.75 in the second round. Shipp had four throws better than the previous American record of 9.58/31-5.25, including three beyond 10 meters.

An Atlanta Track Club quartet of Terry Ozell, Trenice Mullis Dubow, Francoise Levinson, and Cynthia Lucking took down the American women's record in the 70-74 4x800 relay with a 16:27.81, knocking more than 27 seconds off the previous AR, and the Atlanta club grabbed five additional age group titles in the women's 4x800 relay.

In the men's 65-69 5000, John Glidewell of the Atlanta Track Club won by more than two minutes with a 17:48.06 that was only four seconds off the American record. His teammates in the men's 80-84 4x800 relay were victorious in an impressive 23:09.54 as Atlanta rolled to wins in four age divisions.

Myrle Mensey (Throwing & Growing) and Flo Meiler (Sprinticity) captured gold in the women's hammer, with Mensey hitting 40.62/133-3 to take the 75-79 title and Meiler throwing 15.68/51-5 in the 90-94 division. In the women's pentathlon, Neringa Jakstiene was dominant in the 60-64 competition, winning by almost 1000 points with a score of 3905.

USATF Board member Dolf Berle of the Texas Express TFC eked out a one-point victory in the men's 60-64 pentathlon, scoring 3139 to stave off David Hood of Wahoo T&F. Berle trailed after the first three events before a big discus toss of 41.33/135-7 elevated him past Hood by 16 points and he stayed close enough to Hood in the 1500 to seal the win.

An exciting finish in the women's 65-69 5000 saw Nancy Simmons of the Impala Racing Team outkick Patrice Combs of the Atlanta TC, using a quick last lap to win in 21:45.87, with Combs earning silver in 21:48.17.
