Hedengren's record-setting week earns her USATF Athlete of the Week honors

INDIANAPOLIS -- Bettering the American U20 records* in the women's mile and 3000 and setting high school national records in the mile, 3000, and two mile, Jane Hedengren (Provo, UT/USATF Utah) earned recognition as the 22nd USATF Athlete of the Week award winner for 2025. It is her second time to be honored this year.

The Timpview High School senior broke the American U20 and high school national records in the mile on Thursday with a 4:23.50 at the HOKA Festival of Miles in St. Louis. En route, she clocked 4:04.68 for 1500, just missing Mary Cain's prep record.

At the Brooks PR meet in Washington on Sunday, the 18-year-old Hedengren won the two mile in 9:17.75 to shatter the high school record of 9:34.12 that she set at Arcadia in April. That time also moved her to No. 8 on the all-time U.S. performer list. Her en route 3000 time of 8:40.99 bettered the ratified American U20 record of 8:57.27 that was set by Ceci Hopp in 1982, and took almost 20 seconds off the high school record.

Other top performances from last week:

  • Trayvon Bromell won the Rome Diamond League men's 100 in a world-leading 9.84.

  • Cooper Lutkenhaus, a rising junior at Justin Northwest High School in Texas, bettered the national high school record in the boys' 800 with a 1:46.26 at the Brooks PR meet in Washington.

  • Jenny Hitchings, 61, bettered the American women's 60-64 record in the 5K with a 19:02 at the Impala Stampede. She broke the ratified national record that was set in 2011 and had the top age-graded performance for all competitors in the race at 98.34%.
