Carey's American record and Para Worlds gold earns her USATF Athlete of the Week honors

INDIANAPOLIS -- Bettering the American record and winning gold in the women's T44 200 at the World Para Athletics Championships, Annie Carey (Boise, ID/USATF Snake River) earned recognition as the 35th USATF Athlete of the Week award winner for 2025.

Carey, a junior at Mount St. Mary's University and a Paralympian at Paris last summer, dashed to a 27.31 to win the T44 200 gold in New Delhi and better her own American record of 27.62 that was set in Paris.

She added silver in the 100 in 13.45 and set a T44 world record of 5.20/17-0.75 in the long jump, placing fourth in the mixed competition. That long jump effort added a centimeter to the world record she set at the USATF Championships in August.

Other top performances from last week:

  • Michael Brannigan smashed his own meet record in the men's T20 1500 at the World Para Athletics Championships with a 3:50.44 clocking that gave him a two-second margin of victory.

  • Jaydin Blackwell bettered his own world record in the men's T38 400 at the World Para Athletics Championships with a 48.00 that put him more than a second ahead of the silver medalist.

  • Arelle Middleton won the women's T44 shot put at the World Para Athletics Championships, beating world record holder Juan Yao of China with a 12.95/42-6 in round four.

  • Joel Gomez won the men's T13 1500 at the World Para Athletics Championships in 3:57.71, leading from the gun and holding off Aleksandr Kostin of Russia, who was competing as a Neutral Para Athlete.

Now in its 24th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week when there are high-level competitions and features the athlete on USATF.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
