Gold medal quartet share USATF Athlete of the Week honors

INDIANAPOLIS — Team USATF topped the medal table and again won the World Team Trophy at the 18th World Athletics Championships in Budapest, in part due to the efforts of Ryan Crouser, Noah Lyles, Sha'Carri Richardson and Laulauga Tausaga-Collins. All four won at least one gold medal and share recognition as the 30th USATF Athlete of the Week award winners for 2023.

  • Crouser (Farmington, Arkansas/USATF Oregon) won the men's shot put world title for the second time in a row and came within six centimeters of breaking his own world record with a 23.51/77-1.75 that set a World Championships meet record and was the second-farthest throw in history.
  • Lyles (Clermont, Florida/USATF Potomac Valley) became the first American to win the men's 100/200/4x100 triple at the World Championships since 2007, defending the 200 title he won at Oregon22 in 19.75 and taking his first global 100 crown in a PB 9.83.
  • Richardson (Clermont, Florida/USATF Florida) became the first time qualifier to the final to win the women's 100 at the World Championships, dashing to a world-leading 10.65. She also anchored the U.S. 4x100 to victory in a meet record 41.03, the fourth-fastest time ever, and earned bronze in the 200 in a PB 21.92.
  • Tausaga-Collins (El Cajon, California/USATF San Diego-Imperial) stunned the women's discus field with a huge personal best of 69.49/228-0 on her fifth attempt to become the first American woman to win the event at the World Championships. She moved to No. 2 on the all-time U.S. performer list with her throw.

Now in its 22nd year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week when there are high-level competitions and features the athlete on USATF.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
