Ryan Crouser breaks indoor world record not once but twice at American Track League opening meet

Fayetteville, ARKANSAS -- Ryan Crouser (Portland, Oregon) did not waste any time in asserting his 2021 dominance when the men’s shot put Olympic champion threw a pending indoor world record on his first throw. The distance -- 22.82m (74-10.5) -- bested Randy Barnes’ 1989 record of 22.66m.

With the confidence of usurping the world record title under his belt, Crouser relaxed and reached 21.03m on his second throw. His third attempt once again broke the 32-year-old record but fell short of his first effort, at 22.70m.

“There’s definitely more there,” Crouser said in a post-event interview. He has his eyes set on breaking the outdoor world record later this year, as well as defending his title at the Tokyo Olympic Games in July.

Additionally, reigning outdoor world champion Grant Holloway (Chesapeake, Virginia) equaled his indoor American record in the men’s 60m hurdles in 7.35.

2018 World Indoor silver medalist Vashti Cunningham (Las Vegas, Nevada) won the women’s high jump at 1.90m (6-2.75), while her 2016 Olympian teammate Trayvon Bromell (St. Petersburg, Florida) continued his comeback with a winning 6.48 in the men’s 60m final to tie his own PR.

Megan Clark (Fort Benning, Georgia) and Katie Nageotte (Olmsted Falls, Ohio) settled the women’s pole vault competition with a rare jump off at 4.60m (15-1), where Clark ultimately came out on top.

The next American Track League meet will take place next week, broadcast information TBA.
