McCoy’s Olympic standard highlights storm-shortened USATF Invitational

Prairie View -- Heavy rain and lightning shortened the USATF Invitational after just five events were contested on the campus of Prairie View A&M University on Tuesday. The meet was the ninth stop on the USATF Journey to Gold - Tokyo Outdoor Track & Field Series and was a World Continental Tour Silver event.

Continuing the hot streak that saw her tie her lifetime best of 1.93m/6-4 at the USATF Throws Festival Saturday in Tucson, high jumper Rachel McCoy equaled it again and then went one better, achieving the Olympic qualifying standard of 1.96m/6-5 on her first attempt. McCoy took three attempts at 2.00m/6-6.75 but was unsuccessful.

Morgann LeLeux, a three-time SEC champion for Georgia, missed twice at her opening height of 4.40m/14-4.25 before easing over the bar on her last try and then went clear through 4.60m/15-1 to win the women’s pole vault.

Two-time USATF Indoor champion Chris Carter steadily improved throughout his series in the men's triple jump, capping off a string of season bests with a 16.95m/55-7.5 to win by more than three feet.

Due to rain and lightning the men’s pole vault was relocated to MAC Vault Academy in nearby Navasota where Chris Nilsen had a first-attempt clearance at 5.90m/19-4.25 for the win and made three tries at joining the six-meter club. Kyle Pater, last year’s Toyota USATF Indoors bronze medalist, set a season best of 5.80m/19-0.25 for second, while indoor collegiate record holder KC Lightfoot was third with a clearance at 5.70m/18-8.25.

The next stop on the Journey To Gold Tokyo Series is the USATF Chula Vista Field Festival on May 29, 2021.
