Team Americas win IAAF Continental Cup
OSTRAVA, Czech Republic -- Team USATF athletes lead Team Americas to a first-place finish at the IAAF Continental Cup Ostrava 2018. With five Americans claiming wins in their events, Team Americas totaled with 262 points ahead of Europe’s 233.
In the men’s triple jump, Christian Taylor (Atlanta, Georgia) took the early lead with a jump of 17.59m/57-8.5 on his first attempt and was able to hold on for the victory, scoring eight points for Team Americas. Noah Lyles (Alexandria, Virginia) wrapped up his stellar season clocking 10.01 to win the 100m narrowly edging out China’s Bingtian Su. In the hammer throw, American record holder DeAnna Price (Moscow Mills, Missouri) took the lead on her third attempt with a toss of 75.13m but eventually defeated the world record holder Anita Wlodarczyk with a heave of 75.46m/247.6 on her final throw of the competition. With a new elimination style format in the 3000m, Paul Chelimo (Beaverton, Oregon) survived and came out on top, crossing the line in 7:57.13. In the pole vault, Sam Kendricks (Oxford, Mississippi) won with a vault of 5.85m/19-2.25 and went on to miss attempts at 5.90m and 6.01m.

Simpson Extends Fifth Avenue Mile Winning Streak Record
NEW YORK CITY -- In cool and wet conditions, Jenny Simpson (Oviedo, Florida) won the New York Road Runners’ (NYRR) women’s New Balance Fifth Avenue Mile for the sixth consecutive year, her seventh title overall. Simpson crossed the finish line in 4:18.8 holding off Colleen Quigley (St. Louis, Missouri) who finished in 4:19.2.

William “Bill” Falk died Friday, September 7, 2018, at the age of 91. Bill was a nationally known pole vault expert, first at the high school level, and then during long tenures at both the University of Rhode Island and the University of Miami. Bill was inducted into the Hall of Fame at the University of Rhode Island and the Rhode Island Track Coaches Hall of Fame. In addition, he was a five-time New England Coach of the Year. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Summertime Fund, c/o RI Foundation, One Union Station, Providence, RI 02903. Funeral services will be private.
Roy Chernock, died Tuesday, September 4, 2018m at the age of 90 in West Palm Beach, Florida. While head coach at C.W. Post College, Roy coached 39 NCAA All-Americans, including five NCAA champions and was inducted into the Hall of Fame at his alma mater New York University, C.W. Post College and William & Mary College, where he started the women’s track program in the late 1970s.
