Biggest World Athletics Rankings Movers of the Week – 9/1/2026

From August 25 – September 1, one U.S. athlete in the top 100 of their respective event had the biggest absolute improvement to their World Ranking, improving by 31 spots.

John Reniewicki improved his ranking score from 1176 to 1208 points in the Men’s 1500m after a third-place finish at the 9^th International Wiesław Maniak Memorial. This World Athletics Continental Tour – Bronze meet provides “C” category placing points, meaning Reniewicki earned a placing score of 31 in addition to his result score of 1191 for running 3:33.80. With a performance score of 1222, Reniewicki replaced his mark from the heats at the Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships – a 3:43.13 that was good for only 1065 points. This improved his five-mark average by 32 points, moving him from 91^st to 60^th in the men’s 1500m world rankings.

When assessing improvement based on percentage increase in ranking (e.g. 2^nd to 1^st is a 50% improvement as is moving from 30^th to 15^th), one U.S. athlete climbed from 3^rd to 1^st for a 66.7% improvement.

We have a new World Leader in the Men’s 200m as Kenny Bednarek stormed to a 19.62 en route to winning at Weltklasse Zürich. Surprisingly, Bednarek’s fifth best performance score over the past twelve months before this meet was his 19.98 in the heats at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25. Performances in the heats are not awarded placing scores; thus, this mark was heavily weighing down Bednarek’s overall ranking score. A Diamond League victory and 19.62 result is good for a performance score of 1423, which improves Bednarek’s ranking score by 39 points and places him firmly atop the men’s 200m world rankings.
