2028 U.S. OLYMPIC TEAM TRIALS – MARATHON QUALIFICATIONS

Qualifying Standards 

The 2028 Olympic Team Trials - Marathon standards/procedures will be based on USATF’s current understanding of World Athletics’ 2028 Olympic Qualifying Procedures and the USOPC’s Olympic Qualifying Procedures. Accordingly, these standards/procedures are subject to change based on any updated Olympic Qualifying Procedures or World Athletics Qualifying Procedures.

Men

A standard: to be determined at a later date in coordination with the LOC
B standard: 2:16:00 

Women 

A standard: to be determined at a later date in coordination with the LOC
B standard: 2:37:00

Athletes achieving an A Standard will qualify for travel funding to the Olympic Trials

Athletes achieving a B standard will be guaranteed entry to the Olympic Trials

Qualifying Window

  • Marathon: September 1, 2025 until a date TBD 45-60 days before the Olympic Trials (to be set after the Olympic Trials location is determined)

  • Half Marathon: January 1, 2027 until the same closing date determined for the marathon

A STANDARDS

  • Members of the previous 3 Olympic Marathon Teams (2016, 2021, 2024)

  • 2025, 2026, 2027 US Marathon Champions

  • 2025 & 2027 World Championships Marathon Team

B STANDARDS

  • 2026 & 2027 US Running Circuit Champions
  • Top 10 finish at 2025 and 2026 US Marathon Championships
  • Top 10 finish at any platinum label marathons inside the OTQ window
  • Half marathon marks of 1:03:00 (men) and 1:12:00 (women)
  • Rule 8 - Marathon, during the current or four previous calendar years:
    • Earned an individual medal in an Olympic Games or in a World Athletics World Championship
    • Won an individual USA Marathon Championship
    • Earned a USA Olympic Team Selection 

Qualifying Guidelines

  1. Athletes must achieve the qualifying standard listed above, or be qualified under the Additional Opportunities section above, in order to enter the 2028 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Marathon event.
  2. The qualifying mark must be made on a USATF certified course, in an event sanctioned by USA Track & Field or a member federation of World Athletics. The course must be USATF/WORLD ATHLETICS/AIMS certified with an active course certification and have an elevation loss no greater than 3.30 meters/km. All course configurations will be accepted (no minimum separation).
  3. All qualifying performances are subject to verification.
  4. “Net/chip” will be considered an acceptable method of timing 
  5. Athletes must be a USATF Member in good standing and eligible to represent the United States in International competitions.   
  6. The minimum age for participation is sixteen (16).
