Michta-Coffey, Christie lead Team USATF at IAAF Race Walking Team Championships


TAICANG, China -- A strong contingent of American race walkers head into this weekend’s IAAF Race Walking Team Championships with competitive performances in sight in Taicang, China.


Live coverage will be available exclusively (in the U.S.) on NBC Sports Gold, starting Friday with the Men and Women’s 50km Race Walk at 7:30 p.m. ET, followed by the Men’s 10km and Women’s 20km at 3:00 a.m. ET Saturday. The championships conclude Saturday with the Women’s 10km and Men’s 20km beginning at 8:30 p.m. ET. Click here for the full broadcast schedule.  


Veterans lead the way

The U.S. will face off against over 350 athletes from 48 countries, per the IAAF. Sixteen-time national champion Maria Michta-Coffey (Nesconset, New York) and Nick Christie (San Diego, California) are coming off 3000m USATF Indoor titles; Miranda Melville (Rush, New York), two-time national champion, finished second to Michta-Coffey in both the USATF Indoors 3000m and the 20k US Race Walking Trials; Erin Taylor-Talcott (Owego, New York) is pioneer for women participating in 50km; Susan Randall (Beavercreek, Ohio) represented USATF at Pan American Cup last year finishing third in 5:02:10 and holds American masters records in the women’s 40-44 age category in the 25k, 35k and 50k race walk; Kattie Burnett (Bellevue, WA) was fourth in the 50k at the World Championships with an American record time of 4:21:51.


U20 athletes look to make international splash

Five U20 athletes are representing USATF: 16-year-old Giovanni Cisneros (Elgin, Illinois), 18-year-olds Eduardo Uria (McAllen, Texas) and Lauren Harris (Holtsville, New York), 19-year-olds Kayla Torres (Sayville, New York) and Kayla Allen (Wichita, Kansas) head to China as the future of USATF race walking. Allen is the veteran of the young group in international competition having competed in the 10k at the 2016 IAAF Race Walking Team Championships finishing in 47th in 55:51.
