USATF candidate Willie Banks elected to IAAF Council


DOHA — USATF candidate Willie Banks was elected to the IAAF Council Wednesday morning at the IAAF Congress being held prior to the IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar.


There were 13 Council positions up for election, Banks received 101 votes to be among the 13. For full IAAF election results, visit

“It remains vital that USATF remain represented on the IAAF Council,” said USATF Interim President/Chair Michael Conley. “With this election, the USA will continue in its role as an influential figure in the international arena and remain diligent moving toward the 2021 IAAF World Championships on U.S. soil.”

USATF’s membership nominated and the USATF Board of Directors approved Banks to stand for IAAF election during the 2018 USATF Annual Meeting in Columbus, Ohio. Since December, USATF staff worked in tandem with Banks, targeting IAAF voters and influencers to inform them of Mr. Banks qualifications  and vision. 


Banks represented the U.S. in 18 international competitions and was a member of the 1984 and 1988 Olympic teams. He captured a silver medal as a member of the U.S. team at the 1983 World Championships and was also a member of the 1987 World Championships team. 

Former USATF President/Chair Stephanie Hightower, who was elected to IAAF Council as the top vote-getter for one of six women’s seats in 2015, served for four years on the IAAF Council. Hightower was elected as NACAC Treasurer in July.

President Sebastian Coe was re-elected by the entire delegation voting 203-0.
