The country’s finest converge in Des Moines for 2019 Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships


DES MOINES, Iowa --  The greatest track and field athletes in the world are set to compete at the 2019 Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships, July 25-28, at Drake Stadium on the campus of Drake University.

USATF returns to Des Moines for the second consecutive year, following previous hosting duties in 2010 and 2013. Athletes this year are vying not just for glory and national titles, but also for spots on three national teams: The Match: USA vs Europe, Thorpe Cup, and of course, IAAF World Championships.

Both accomplished veterans and a highly-touted group of relative newcomers will have the opportunity to shine this weekend. Recent NCAA champions Michael Norman (400m) and Sha’Carri Richardson (100m) burst on the scene during the collegiate season and are holding their own in 2019. Christian Coleman (100m) holds the indoor 60m record, and Noah Lyles continues to make a name for himself in the 200m. Meanwhile, Justin Gatlin (100m) will attempt to make Team USATF once more and defend his 2017 World Championships title, and Allyson Felix (400m) returns to competition following the birth of her daughter last year.


Quick hits: Athletes to watch out for at 2019 Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships

Christian Coleman (100m/200m) -- The Atlanta native is the top ranked 100m runner in the world going into the Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships...he is the only American to beat legend Usain Bolt twice at the 2017 World Championships... holds the WR at 60 meters indoors. 

Justin Gatlin (100m). You can’t count this youngster out, at age 37 he’s ranked second in the world and in the U.S. behind Coleman...Gatlin’s experience and consistency make his a true threat to win gold again at age 38.

Noah Lyles (100m, 200m) -- Lyles didn’t just dance his way into the top of the 100m rankings, he brings about parity among the US sprinters. Look for him to focus on the 200m at the 2019 World Championships and vye for a 100/200 double in Tokyo. 

Michael Norman (400m) - Recent NCAA Champion Norman, coached by Olympic gold medalist Quincy Watts...Norman’s mother is Japanese, he’s learning to speak the language...Norman broke out in his first professional race, dropping a time of 43.45 to make his entry into the post-collegiate world

Ryan Crouser (SP) - Crouser leads the American contingent in the shot put with consistent throws over 21-meters in 2019. With a heave of 22.74m in April he moved to #6 all-time in the world, the longest throw in the world since 1990.


Ajee' Wilson (800m) - The indoor and outdoor 800m American record holder is the 2017 World Championship bronze medalist looking for the elusive Olympic medal. She has dominated the middle distances with three USATF 800m outdoor titles (‘14, ‘17, ‘18), four 800m Indoor titles (‘18, ‘16, ‘14,’13) , and 1000m (‘19) and 600m Indoor (‘17) titles. 

Emily Sisson (10,000m/Marathon) - Sisson became the third-fastest American woman in history in the 10k clocking 30:49. She then finished sixth in her marathon debut at the 2019, London Marathon, finishing in 2:23.08, the fastest ever debut by an American. 

Keni Harrison (110m Hurdles) - After missing the 2016 squad by one spot, Harrison stormed back to win the Diamond League and set a WR, blazing through the short barriers in 12.20 at the London Diamond League event. She’s been cruising in 19 and is poised for the top of the podium at the Toyota USATF Outdoor Champs

Sydney McLaughlin (400m hurdles) - Coached by Olympic 100m hurdle champion, Joanna Hayes, McLaughlin made her professional debut in 2019. McLaughlin was the youngest Olympian on the USATF squad in 2016 and hopes to build off that experience for the 2020 team.
