The 2019 USATF U20 Outdoor Championships, formerly known as Junior Outdoors, ready for an exciting weekend in Miramar


MIRAMAR, Florida – An international team will be selected and national titles earned at the 2019 U20 Outdoor Championships, June 21-23, at Ansin Sports Complex in Miramar, Florida. Top athletes under the age of 20 from across the country will vye for coveted spots on Team USATF at the Pan American U20 Championships in Costa Rica later this summer.

Among the anticipated competing athletes is Matthew Boling of Houston Strake Jesuit, who will be competing in the 100m, 200m, and long jump. Boiling ran the fastest all-conditions 100m in high school history in late April. He’s currently the high school U.S. No. 1 in the 100m, U.S. No. 2 in the long jump and U.S. No. 4 in 200m.

Freshman standout Kayla Davis of Run U Xpress is the fastest entry in the women’s 400m. In the winter, Davis competed at the Toyota USATF Indoor Championships placing third, running the third-fastest 300m in high school history. She’s currently No. 3 all-time in the high school 400m with a 51.17. Davis will compete against NCAA Indoor All-American, Big Ten Indoor and Outdoor 400m champion, Alexis Holmes.

American indoor 600m record holder and Toyota USATF Indoors champion Athing Mu leads the competition in the women’s 800m.  The high school junior ran 2:01.38 in the 800m at the Music City Distance Carnival on June 1. This ranks as the fastest high school time in the nation and ranks No. 6 all-time.

Hazelwood West High School’s Justin Robinson will be featured in the 400m. The junior ran the high school No. 2 all-time 400m at the Great Southwest Classic on June 8. Robinson broke the junior class national record with a 44.84 to become the third U.S. high schooler  to break 45 seconds in the event.

Taylor Ewert of Beavercreek High School is one of the most decorated high school race walkers in history, and she’ll be competing in the U20 10K race walk. Ewert holds the outdoor American Junior records in the 3K and 5k race walk and indoor junior records in the 1500m, mile and 3K race walk. The 2018 USATF Youth Athlete of the Year is also a dominant Ohio distance runner, winning the Gatorade XC Player of the Year in 2018.

Valor Christian’s Anna Hall will be making her season’s heptathlon debut at the USATF U20 Championships. In February, Hall broke the high school national record in the pentathlon at the Toyota USATF Indoor Championships, which became her second high school national record. At the 2018 IAAF World U20 Championships, Hall placed ninth in the heptathlon.

In the men’s 100mH, 2017 Pan-Am U20 champion Eric Edwards Jr. will be competing. The former U.S. junior champion made it to the NCAA Outdoor Championships 100mH final this year while competing for the University of Oregon. St. Mary’s Stockton’s Jamar Marshall is also in the field. The California native ran 13.31 for the nation’s second fastest time all-conditions in high school this year. Edwards and Marshall will also compete against Tai Brown, who placed 13th in the 110mH at NCAAs.

In the women’s high jump, Morgan Smalls has the best clearance of the field with 1.91m. The Panther Creek junior has the second-best indoor jump in high school history behind Vashti Cunningham. Smalls will also be competing in the triple jump.

Britton Wilson of Mills Godwin High School will be looking to make her first U.S. team in the 400mH. Wilson currently has the high school US No. 1 in the event with 56.77. Wilson will be competing against the University of Kentucky’s Massai Russell. Following in the men’s 400mH, James Smith of Arizona will be competing. The rising sophomore placed fifth at NCAA’s.
