Photo finishes highlight day six of the USATF Hershey National Junior Olympics

Sacramento, CA -- The first wave of running finals took place on day six of the USATF Hershey National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships. The day was full of national titles, photo finishes and new national records. 


One day of competition remains at USATF Hershey National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships. All competition will be broadcast live on USATF.TV+. The broadcast will begin each day at 8:00am PT with the first scheduled running event.

In the girl’s 8 & under 800m, Yasmin Lopez (Pacific Coast Shock Waves) broke the national record she set in the prelims. Lopez led the rest of the field by over 10 seconds to cross the finish line in a 2:34.22. 


Following Lopez, Kahlael Allen (Blazers Track) set a national record of his own in the boy’s 8 & under 800m. Allen ran 2:28.26 to break the previous record of 2:28.59 set in 2017 by Grant Reynolds. Victor Jaimez-Solorio Jr. (Unattached) took home the silver medal with a 2:29.92. 


Harper McClain (Unattached) capped off her first year of running track the right way. McClain became a national champion in the girl’s 15-16 3000m run with a 9:51.21. 


The 200m finals had some races that were too close to call. In the boy’s 8 & under final, Dai-Shawn Fonteno (Crazy Speed Track and Field) and Kareen Knox II (Las Vegas Heat) were separated by seven one-thousandths. Fonteno captured the title with 27.942 and Knox followed in 27.949. 


In the boy’s 11-12 200m Justin Fulton (Olympus Track Club) and Keynan Cotton (Bellevue Breeze Rec Track) had an even closer race. Fulton won the gold by five one-thousandths with 24.742 and Cotton took second in 24.747. 


Payton Payne almost broke her own national record in the girl’s 11-12 200m. She dominated the field in 24.35 for the title. Payne also anchored Glenarden Track to a Junior Olympic championship in the 4x100m relay. 


In the men’s 17-18 4x100m relay, Tucson Elite Athletics won in a wire to wire finish against Eagles Elite. The men of Tucson Elite finished in 40.96 and the Eagles followed in 41.07. 


Sophia Gorriaran (Providence Cobras) ran the fastest girls time of the day in the 13-14 800m. She made a strong move going into the bell lap and maintained the lead to finish in 2:10.82. 


There was strong competition in the boy’s 13-14 shot put. Eugene Brooks IV (Las Vegas Blazin One’s), JaBron Brooks (Team Evolution) and Roury McCloyen (Greenville Track) threw over 15 meters. Brooks IV threw 15.92m/52-2.75 to win the gold medal, JaBron Brooks took second with 15.48m/50-9.5 and McCloyen placed third in 50-0.5. 


Brandon Hills (Colorado Springs Striders) completed his double in the jumps with his win in the 13-14 long jump. He bettered his leading mark on his final jump with 6.31m/20-8.50. 


In the men’s 17-18 javelin throw, Christopher White (Team Edge) had the top three throws of the competition. White was also the only athlete to throw over 60 meters. On his final attempt he threw 64.15m/210-5 to officially take home the title.
