Mu American record wins her USATF Athlete of the Week

2/27/2019

Athing Mu (Trenton, New Jersey) set a stunning American indoor record in the women’s 600m to earn USATF Athlete of the Week.

Mu, 16, captured the hearts of track and field fans with her scintillating 1:23.57 to win the USATF Indoor Championships at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex, rocketing to No. 2 on the all-time world indoor list as she broke Alysia MontaƱo’s existing AR. Only the world best of 1:23.44 by Russia’s Olga Kotlyarova in 2004 is better than Mu’s time. The Youth Olympic Games silver medalist at 800m last fall, Mu broke the high school record in the prelims with a 1:26.23 and then ran away from 2018 World Indoors 800m fifth-placer Raevyn Rogers over the final 100 to take gold.

Full results are here.

Other notable performances from the Championships:

Donavan Brazier — Minutes after Mu’s fireworks in the women’s 600m, Brazier smashed the world indoor best in the men’s 600m, clocking 1:13.77 to knock more than a second off the previous best.

Anna Hall — Hall set a high school indoor record in the pentathlon with her 4,320 points, placing third overall. She broke the previous record of 4,068, held by Kendell Williams, the woman who won at Ocean Breeze.

Brittany Brown — Brown set a meet record with her world-leading 35.95 to win the women’s 300m. The former Iowa star was fifth in the 200m at the USATF Outdoors last year, and added a seventh-place effort at the NACAC Championships.

Nick Christie — Christie set a meet record in the men’s 3,000m race walk with an 11:35.34 that took more than a second off the existing record, set in 2016 by John Nunn.

Ajee’ Wilson — Wilson ran a meet record and world-leading 2:34.71 to win the women’s 1,000m. It was her sixth career U.S. indoor gold.
