Merkle 100K victory wins him USATF Athlete of the Week

Israel Merkle (Akron, Ohio) won the men’s USATF 100K Road Championship to earn USATF Athlete of the Week.


Merkle, 30, finished the race in 6:54:33 to win by almost 20 minutes at the Mad City Ultras in Madison, Wisconsin. The winner of the 2018 Akron Marathon, Merkle made his ultrarunning debut with a victory at the 2016 USATF 50 Mile Road Championships at the Tussey mOUnTaiNBACK.

Other notable performances from the weekend:


Valarie Allman — Allman moved to No. 5 on the U.S. all-time women’s discus list with a world-leading 67.15m/220-3 throw at Chula Vista.

Caroline Cotsakis — Cotsakis was the women’s winner at the USATF 100K championships in 9:48:48.

Quincy Hall — South Carolina’s Hall ran a world-leading 44.53 in the 400m at the Gamecock Invitational.

Evonne Britton — USATF indoor 60m hurdles runner-up Britton set a world-leading mark with her 12.81 in the 100m hurdles to win the Grenada Invitational.

Trey Knight — Knight climbed to No. 9 on the U.S. junior all-time hammer list with his 65.15m/213-9 throw with the 16-pound implement.

CJ Albertson — Better known previously as a steeplechaser, Albertson set a world indoor best in the marathon at the New York City Armory, running 2:17:59.4 over 210+ laps of the 200m oval.


Now in its 18th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on USATF.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
