Lyles’ sizzling 200m wins him USATF Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS -- Noah Lyles (Alexandria, Virginia) became the second-fastest American ever in the 200m to earn USATF Athlete of the Week.


Lyles dominated the half-lap at the Lausanne Diamond League meet, clocking 19.50 to move him to fourth on the all-time world performers list behind Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake and Michael Johnson, and eighth on the performance list. Only Johnson’s then-world record 19.32 at the ‘96 Olympics is faster on the performance list by an American. Running in lane seven, Lyles won by .37 over a field that included reigning world and European champion Ramil Guliyev of Turkey.

Katie Nageotte — Nageotte set an outdoor personal best of 4.82m/15-9.75 to win the pole vault at the Lausanne DL meet.

Tonea Marshall — Marshall slashed her PR to 12.57 to win the 100m hurdles a the NACAC U23 Championships in Mexico. It is the third-fastest time in the nation in 2019.

Trevor Stewart — Stewart ran away with the men’s 400m gold at the NACAC U23 Championships, clocking 45.01 to beat U.S. teammate Wil London by .4 seconds.

Paul Chelimo — Chelimo ran the fastest outdoor 5,000m by an American this season with a 13:05.70 that placed him sixth at Lausanne.

Bernard Lagat — Lagat set an American masters 40+ record in the marathon with his 2:12:10 at the Gold Coast Marathon in Australia.
